Meet Terence, a dedicated ocean photographer from South Africa whose story is as inspiring as the images he captures.
A former national-level bodyboarder, Terence’s journey took a turn after a major shoulder injury. Unable to ride waves like he once did, he redirected his focus—combining his deep love for the ocean with his background in photography. “I had already worked as a photographer on cruise ships, shooting portraits and events,” Terence shares. “But when COVID hit and everything paused, I had a chance to really reflect. That’s when I realized I could still be in the ocean—this time with a camera in hand.”
What began as a creative outlet quickly became a career. Terence brings to his work a unique blend of wave knowledge, watermanship, and visual storytelling. “The ocean is God’s art in motion,” he says. “Being out there, capturing raw, unfiltered moments—it’s humbling. And sharing those moments with people who may never experience the ocean firsthand… that’s what drives me.”

Safety in the Surf
But working in the water isn’t without risk. Terence recalls how his camera housing struck his head several times while shooting in powerful surf. After a particularly bad knock, he knew he couldn’t afford to take chances anymore. “Wearing a helmet in this line of work isn’t just important—it’s essential,” he says.
That’s when Terence turned to Gath Helmets—trusted by watermen and waterwomen around the world. “Because of my ocean sports background, I already knew Gath had the best reputation. Their helmets are made for the water—lightweight, snug, and actually designed to perform in the ocean.”
His Gear of Choice: SFC and EVA Hat
For his daily work, Terence relies on two Gath models: the SFC and the EVA Hat. The SFC gives him full head coverage and impact protection when he’s diving into heavy conditions, while the EVA Hat offers a more casual, comfortable fit for lighter sessions. Both keep him safe, focused, and free to do what he loves—without compromise.
“In the past, people thought helmets were uncool. But that mindset has changed. Out there, a helmet isn’t just part of your gear—it’s a lifeline.”

Words of Advice for Aspiring Water Photographers
Terence doesn’t just shoot the ocean—he respects it deeply. And his advice reflects that:
“Start slow. Learn your environment. Respect the ocean—it’s powerful, unpredictable, and humbling. Know your gear inside and out, and never chase the shot at the cost of your safety. And always, always wear proper protection—including a helmet. Your passion is important, but your health is everything.”
