Kalama Stratton Joins the Gath Team: A Rising Star in the Surfing World

” My story started at a wave called Barra de la Cruz.
It was a small day, but my dad pushed me into a long, perfect wave,
and I loved surfing from that moment on.”

At just 12 years old, Kalama Stratton is already making waves in the international surfing scene—and now, he’s officially joined the Gath Team, bringing his fearless energy and youthful stoke to the legendary helmet brand trusted by water sports professionals around the globe.

Roots in Two Surfing Cultures
Born on February 23, 2012, Kalama hails from Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico—home to some of the heaviest beach breaks in the world. His roots run deep in both Mexican and Hawaiian cultures, with a Mexican mother and Hawaiian father, and it’s this unique heritage that has shaped his profound connection to the ocean.

Barrels Beyond His Years
From a very young age, Kalama displayed an extraordinary talent for surfing. By the time he was 11, he was already tackling massive barrels in Puerto Escondido that many seasoned surfers would hesitate to enter. In August 2024, he made headlines after riding an incredible barrel that left the surf community in awe. “That was the best wave I’ve ever gotten out there,” Kalama said.

Taking His Skills Global
Kalama’s passion has taken him beyond his home breaks. He recently charged the legendary Banzai Pipeline in Hawaii, showcasing not only his technical ability but also the mental strength and ocean knowledge of a surfer far beyond his years. His style blends power and grace, marked by a fearlessness that makes it clear—this kid is something special.

A Perfect Fit for Gath
His entry into the Gath Team marks a new chapter in his journey. Gath Sports is known for supporting athletes who push boundaries and redefine what’s possible in the water. Kalama is the perfect fit: a young charger already turning heads on the world stage, with a bright future ahead.

Stepping into the Pro Circuit
Kalama is also beginning to dip his toes into professional competition, having entered the Men’s Qualifying Series in the 2024/2025 season. With each new wave he rides, Kalama continues to prove he’s not just the future of surfing—he’s already part of its present.

How it all began:
My story started at a wave called Barra de la Cruz. It was a small day, but my dad pushed me into a long, perfect wave—and I loved surfing from that moment on.

Home spot:
Puerto Escondido, Mexico—especially Zicatela. It’s where I’ve learned so much and where I get to challenge myself.

Favorite surf spot in the world:
Wherever I can catch good waves and have fun—but if I had to choose, probably Zicatela.

Competition results:
I don’t have many results yet because there aren’t many comps where I live, but I’m just getting started.

Future goals:
My goal is to become a world champion and win more championships. I want to keep pushing myself and grow as a surfer.

Kalama Stratton on Surfing, Safety, and the Future

Why is the helmet important in surfing?
I use a helmet to keep my head safe—because if you hit your head, you could die or get seriously injured. Your head is really sensitive, so protecting it is super important.

Do you think it’s cool to wear a helmet?
Some people think it’s not cool or that it makes you look like a kook, but I like helmets because they keep me safe in the water. I’d rather be safe than not safe.

Why did you choose Gath Helmets?
I like Gath helmets because they’re comfortable, they keep me safe, and I’ve just always used them. They’re my go-to.

A few words to encourage the new generation to wear helmets:
Helmets are super cool because they keep you safe in the water. Don’t be afraid to stand out—just be smart.
